May is mental health awareness month. Although we are highlighting awareness this month, let's not forget that people struggle everyday with mental health illnesses. You are not alone;although often times it feels like it. I think everyone has struggled with their mental health at some point in their life. We have all struggled with something-the difference is how we handle it. The first time I realized I needed help was so scary. I hid it because I thought people would see me differently. But I learned over time that it is okay to not be okay. It is okay not to be strong all the time. It is okay to ask for help.
As a woman of color I grew up thinking that I must be strong all the time, if not I would be viewed as weak. But that is not TRUE- what makes you weak is not admitting that you need help and admitting that something is wrong. I no longer care what others think about me, I care that I am finally taking care of me. I am standing in my truth!! Who else can stand with me??
